Mattel Decides Not To Renew Its Ferrari Licence

posted in Road Cars, Diecast, Formula 1 |

Big news today as Mattel confirmed that it will not be renewing its licence with Ferrari, bringing to an end a partnership that has lasted for 15 years.

Mattel’s contract with Ferrari officially ends on December 31st. The American company, however still plans to release several Ferrari replicas over the next six months, including key subjects like the Ferrari 458 Speciale, the LaFerrari, the 1:18 Niki Lauda 1976 Ferrari 312 T2 (HWBLY40), and the 2014 F1 cars.

Any replicas that were scheduled for production in 2015 have been canned, including the marque’s latest Ferrari California T.

Mattel’s presence on the diecast scene will diminish significantly, although they will no doubt continue to manufacture TV and film cars.

It will also be interesting to see whether Minichamps or Spark are willing to fork out for the lucrative Ferrari licence, and carry on from where Mattel left off.
