About Me

Leigh PhotoHi there, my name’s Leigh Hobden and I’d like to welcome you to my diecast blog. Every day I’ll be updating these pages with interesting new developments and gossip from the world of diecast plus, as a massive motorsport fan, anything else that catches my eye!

I’ll be telling everybody about all of the latest diecast releases and gossip, as well as images and maybe the odd video or two! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it!

I work for Grand Prix Legends as the Diecast Manager. It’s probably the largest online retailer of Diecast in the world, so all the models I list in the diary should link through to the Diecast Legends site in order for you to see images and then be able to purchase the model. GPL is a ‘proper’ company with huge stocks that are all looked after by the team. I want all of the customers of GPL to receive their models in pristine condition including the packaging. GPL has even had bespoke packaging boxes created so that models can be sent out without getting damaged.

I need you! The more people who comment, Digg the stories, rate the vidcasts on iTunes and YouTube, the more traffic the diary will generate. The more traffic, the more time I will be ‘allowed’ to spend on the diary. That could mean longer vidcasts, even maybe audience participation vidcasts, with the audience being made up of the followers of Leigh’s Diary who Digg us, rate us and write comments.

I will always try and answer comments and questions but please bear in mind that if I know a release date it WILL be in the diary. Just do a search at the top right to see if the model has been listed yet. If you ask when will a model be out the answer will probably be ‘Still don’t know yet’.

I would like firstly to congratulate you on your daily diaries which keep us all well informed.could you help maybe with a request to minichamps regarding more of their figures especially the mugello (Hawaiian flower design) and the Austin Powers liveried leathers from valencia 03 to compliment their already released bikes-regards chris curtis

  5. 5 On October 23rd, 2007, Leigh 'Diecast' Hobden said:

I’m also very keen to see Minichamps release these figures! I was hoping that the second Mugello bike would come with a figure like the 2000 Donington bike did, but obviously that didn’t happen. I would be surprised if Minichamps did not eventually announce these, but I think they are currently concentrating on producing what they have announced so far before announcing any more new subjects.

    Hi Leigh.
i’d be very interested too to hear your opinion on EXOTO because they think British diecast sellers are last to get the important models/or are they more loyal to their home market?

  7. 7 On December 18th, 2007, Leigh 'Diecast' Hobden said:

I wasn’t aware of that, did Exoto tell you that themselves?

  8. 8 On December 18th, 2007, peter cavellini said:

It was an assumption on my behalf because some of the diecast we’re waiting for is for sale on they’re web site which i imagine bugs a lot of diecast collectors because it can take a year to get here.I did get an e-mail from EXOTO saying they were trying to get their build times down which is fare enough but being the respected company they are this should have been seen at production meetings and it puts companies like you in awkward positions to your customers.

Hi leigh can you explain to me and probably a few million others why companies like EXOTO realease their new stuff at home and seem to take forever to let the rest of the planet!have theirs!.Is it badly estimating the demand or just they know we’ll wait?

  12. 12 On February 12th, 2008, Leigh 'Diecast' Hobden said:

I’m afraid not! I ‘m not sure we’re THAT far behind Exoto’s ‘home’ countries, but with an Exoto I now automatically expect wait of years rahter than months. And, like all the other diecast manufacturers’ offerings, what choice do we have but to wait? It’s not as if we can find exactly the same thing available elsewhere.

Hi Leigh, Could you use your mighty powers to force Sunstar to make a Police car version of their 1/12 scale morris minor (like minichamps do in 1/18 scale) Also, while your flexing your muscles, there’s never been any half descent Italian Job die-cast, just some rubbish from Corgi that can’t even get the number of spotlights right! I am placing my order now for 3 minis,2x E-Types,A silver DB4,A black Fiat Dino… Oh bugger-i”ll buy the lot in 1/18 scale!

I notice that you have a sample of the Skoda Joyster concept, but will probably not feature it in the catalogue. Why not? Assuming the quality is good, is this because of the brand? Skoda has a very loyal following, and make cars every bit as good as their VW parent. It is about time Skoda was featured. The Octavia vRS, Superb, and Fabia vRS would be a start - I believe these are all manufactured by a company in the Czech republic.

We have had that question many times in the past! It’s Universal Hobbies who are making them, but they seem to be making so much money out of replicating tractors that the RC30s seem to keep getting put back on the production schedule. No-one’s announced any plans to do 1/43 GP2 or Indycars, although it would be great if these were available. Minichamps used to do 1/8 F1 helmets, but as they don’t anymore all I can think is that they felt that the demand wasn’t there, which is a shame. I think I can safely say that there are no plans to replicate Hamilton from the Chinese Grand Prix!

Also, if SMTS are looking for any niche ideas, it would be great to see Frank Williams’ early cars from 1972 - 76 (I’ve got the driver/car list if required !)

  69. 69 On April 23rd, 2009, Paul Normand said:

Why are Bauer now making, what appears to be, two non-existent Bugatti Royales based on their poorly interpreted initial Coupe Napoleon?

The interior, of Bauer’s original model, is both incorrect and disappointing. The seat, doors and roof lining should have been upholstered in brocade. However, what Bauer has done is use, what appears to be the same non-descript material on the entire interior, including the floor. There can be no excuse for this disastrous decision. The chassis has been painted pillar box red. This is incorrect and I can’t believe that such a blatant and obvious colour would have ever been part of Ettore Bugatti’s artistic ethos; after all he turned down potential customers who he thought inappropriate! He even refused to sell one to King Zog of Albania, claiming that ‘the man’s table manners are beyond belief!’ Lastly, the wheels have been a cost cutting exercise; they are far too shiny; they should have a satin aluminium finish.

What would Bugatti have made of Bauer’s first costly tasteless attempt?

Are they now just going to very expensively exploit potential purchasers who know no better? I thought the entire focus of any model is to, as accurately as possible, portray its original full scale original.

I was lucky enough not only to be at the auction of the Kellner car at The Royal Albert Hall, but also to see the five cars that were shown at The Festival of Speed at Goodwood ten years later. I am also unlucky enough to have bought Bauer’s model!

It seems very wrong to corrupt these iconic cars be issuing expensive pieces of fiction, or have I got it entirely wrong?

  70. 70 On April 28th, 2009, Leigh 'Diecast' Hobden said:

We are aware that the Royale did not have red or beige bodywork, and are also wondering why Bauer are releasing these two colourways. At these new prices however, it is doubtful that anyone will take the decision to purchase one.

We get asked that question almost every week about why can’t Minichamps get a Ferrari licence! I wish I knew the answer, I think Mattel have the ‘exclusive’ and can then ’subcontract’ it out to other diecast manufacturers at their discretion.

Unfortunately we are completely sold out, and we can’t make any more as we reached the 1,000 limited edition limit, and we have to commit to these bases in substantial numbers so we can’t just make a few at a time.

Unfortunately we have been sold out of these models for some time now, sorry! When a model has been sold out for as long as these Ebay is normally the best place to look for them. Good luck!

    Hello Leigh,
I was thinking of buying a scale model but I thought that it would be nice to also buy a rotating display stand like the ones that you use in the weekly vidcasts. Could you please let me know what brand it is because i want to be sure to get a high quality one.

    Cheers,
    Ankur

    Hi Leigh,

Do you have any idea when minichamps will release a 1:18 model of lewis Hamilton’s MP4-24 and do you possibly have any information on what grand prix it will be based on (hopefully one of the latter grand prix when the car became half decent)

    Thanks, regards

    Tom

The rotating display stands we use in the webcasts are from AUTOart. We have a couple in stock at the moment, under codes AA98012 and AA98016.

Minichamps have not given us a release date yet for the McLaren MP4/24, but I imagine that it would be from earlier on in the season, before it received the upgrades. ‘Stnadard’ cars always tend to be from earlier in the year, with ’specials’ released for later season variants if Minichamps deems them worthy.

    Hi Leigh,

Thanks for answering my previous question.
I am interested in ordering the 1:43 model of the mclaren mp4/24 (probably the Hamilton version). This model is advertised on the mclaren website aswell so I was wondering whether you know if this model is exactly the same as the minichamps one as the mclaren website claims that it’s 1:43 mp4/24 model is based on the Hungarian grand prix?

    Thanks, regards
    Tom

I would be very surprised if the McLaren version was the car specifically from the Hungarian Grand Prix. I think it’s more likely that it’s a piece of generic text about the 2009 season during which Hamilton won in Hungary. The model has now been released, you can see it on our website under code DC29401.

    Hello Leigh,
For the Autoart rotary diplay stands, which one will fit a 1:18 scale f1 model? I would deeply appreciate it if you could reply back asap.

    Cheers,

As long as they measure at least 25cm across they will fit a 1:18 F1 car.

Just a query Leigh, have TRUE SCALE MINATURES come down in price?

  101. 101 On February 16th, 2010, Leigh 'Diecast' Hobden said:

Yes, the new True Scale Miniatures subjects are about £5 less then they were last year. The importer has cited a favourable change in the exchange rate. Will we see this repeated elsewhere?!

Hi Leigh, This is a site that’s worth more of my time when I have it. As an aside, do you know any sources for 1/43rd scale tyres? Some of the ones in my F1 diecast collection have perished.

  103. 103 On February 22nd, 2010, Leigh 'Diecast' Hobden said:

Thanks for your kind words, but unfortunately I don’t know of anywhere where you can purchase ’spares’ such as tyres on their own. If you asked this on our forum though then some of the collectors on there may have found a source for them and be able to help you.

    Hi Leigh,
Just wondered if there will be any 1/43 redline ferrari F60’s released, was kind of hoping for a Raikkonen car to go with my la storia collection but suspect i will have to put up with a mattel. Thanks Leigh keep up the good work!

Unfortunately there has been no sign so far of Red Line announcing any 2009 F1 Ferraris. I wouldn’t mind a Raikkonen version myself for my own collection!

    Hi Leigh,

Nothing’s been confirmed yet but it has a been a while since we’ve seen anything released or announced from Red Line.
